Ion-exchange systems
The positive or negative ions on these radicals are replaced by ions of the same sign in solution in the surrounding liquid. During the ion-exchange process, there is no deterioration, solubilization or change in the number of ions.

Two types of resins can be used in the ion exchange process:
- A gel-type resin with a micropore structure, characterized by a natural porosity limited to intermolecular distances.
- A macropore-type resin characterized by an additional artificial porosity that is obtained by adding a suitable substance.
Mono- and multi-functional exchangers
The exchanger may be one of two types: monofunctional or multifunctional. In the former, the molecule contains only one type of radical, while the latter contains various types of radicals.
